Dr. Bcthmann-llollweg, speaking in the Reichstag, said the troops carried the war into tiie enemy's country, and. there stood firm. They could regard the future with every confidence. But the enemy's resistance was unbroken, and Germans could not yet end their sacrifices. The nation would continue to support these with the same heroism as hitherto, for they mu3t and will fight to a successful end a defensive war for right and freedom. They would then remember how their defenceless compatriots in hostile countries bad been maltreated in a manner which was a disgrace to all civilisation. An American correspondent who interviewed the Crown Prince at the headquarters in the field, describes him as a sober, earnest, serious, and thoughtful young man, who has a deep sense of his responsibility. The Prince characterised the war as a wanton sacrifice of life,, and a struggle which seemed to have little sense. or reason. He declared that Germany was left no choice in the matter, and added: 'From the lowest to the highest the people of Germany know that we are lighting for our existence. You vill never be able to-convince the German people that this war is not engineered wholly for the purpose of crushing Germany. There is no war party in Germany, ami .militarism is merely a phrase with which England is endeavoring to scare and arouse the world against ÜB." . , When the Prince was told of the report that the Russians 'nearly captured the Kaiser in the vicinity of Warsaw the Prince laughed heartily, and said lie must tell his father, and that he would enjoy it. "It's simply incredible," be said, "what English papers print about me and also our side of the war. They think me capable of stealing, and permitting my soldiers to loot French homes." A correspondent associated with the Press, who was allowed to visit Kiel, says. "I am permitted to tell the world that Germany is rapidly enlarging her submarine fleet, and now claims to have more than Britain. Amongst other protection from aircraft, machine-guns are posted on the roofs of high buildings."
