PERSONAL.

Mr. J. B. Connett has returned from a visit to Hotorua.

Captain Montgomery Jigs been recommended for the D.S.O. for distinguished gallantly.

Evidently the new aspirant for political fame in the Tauinarunui electorate has a difl'crent idea of Mr Massey than most of his followers, for durin" his address to the electors he is report" ed to have said: "He was only in favour of the good things Mr Massey did and had nothing to do with the bad actions." Evidently the moral is that Mr. Massey docs some if not a lot of bad things. Such a statement from one who iB prepared to follow him into the lobby on a no-confidence motion will hurt those who think there is nothing but ™ood in their chief, but it is the independent man who can say such things. Writes a correspondent:—"Reform has many ways of appealing to the public and evidently makes sure of catching both the farmer and the worker, but under two different headings. In a town under 200 miles from New Plymouth, this party used a newspaper for the purpose of disseminating their views. For the town edition, a manifesto showing what the Tories did (or to be correct, did not) for the workers and what they would (or mainly, would not) do, but such an appeal for votes would not suit the farming community, so for their benefit that great paper, "Light and-Liberty" was distributed (through the same source to appeal to the man on the land. Evidently the paper is now at a discount, for the published price is 3d, but with the necessity of endeavouring to catch the farmers' vote, it is now sold at its face value, nil. This move has done more to amuse than to educate the self-thinking part of the community who have had this twaddle sent to them, and instead of attaining its object, it has lmd the opposite effect. The photograph of the one and only "W.F.M." on the front page is immense."
