LIEUT. HARTNELL FAREWELLED.
A PRESENTATION. An interesting interlude in the usual shooting competitions at the Old Drill Hall took place last night, when Lieutenant Hartnell, who leaves New Plymouth to join the Expeditionary Forces on Tuesday next, was farewelled by the members of the Defence Rifle Club and High School Cadets, each of the bodies making the departing officer a presentation. There was a large number present, and the proceedings were marked with unusual enthusiasm,
Mr. F. J. Hill, president of the club, made the presentation, and spoke in eulogistic terms of what 'Lieutenant Hartnell had done to encourage rifleshooting. Nothing had ever been too mueh trouble for him to undertake in matters connected with the club. jAs secretary of the Taranaki Rifle Association, he (the speaker) could say that the success of the Association was very largely due to Lieutenant Hartnell's good work. It was with the greatest pleasure that he asked Lieutenant Hartnell to accept from the members of the Rifle Club a wristlet watch and pair of military bftir brushes, (Prolonged applause.)
I In reply, Lieutenant .Hartnell said lie could not adequately express his thanks, for his heart was too full of the kind feeling extended to him. He felt he did not deserve the praise bestowed upon him by the president. All that he had done to further rifle-shooting, had been partly a hobby, but chiefly from a sense of duty to do all he could to help the club. He had spent many pleasant times with them, and these would remain with him as a cherished memory. For the handsome gifts bestowed on him he could only say "Thank you!" but he would endeavor while on active service to maintain the good opinion of those present, and he hoped to bring back the mementoes, and keep them for the rest,of his liic. He was proud to go to the war with. such hearty good wishes of the members of the club.
Three hearty, cheers were then given for the .departing officer, followed by musical npnoftii ~
Lieutenant Bottrill, of the High School Cadets, then expressed the appreciation of the Cadets for the splendid services rendered to them by Lieutenant Hartnell. The high standard of efficiency in shooting gained by the Cadets was chiefly due to his coaching the boys. Words could not express their gratitude for the help given. He then called on 11.0 captain of the team, P. Candy, to make a presentation, and the latter, in a few well-chosen words, presented Lieutenant Hartnell with a fountain pen. Lieutenant Hartnell, in his reply, gave the major credit for the Cadets' success to Lieutenant Hall anil to the boys themselves.
