AUCKLAND WOOL SALES. Auckland, Last Night. The first Auckland wool sale took place to-day, when 12,220 bales were disposed of, as compared with 0,696 last year. Despite tho absence of foreign buyers, competition was remarkably keen. It was feared that bush wools and fleeces of poor quality would in particular be a drug on the market, for in the past it has been mainly Continental buyers who have taken this quality. In every class, however, Bradford buyers this morning operated freely, and New Zealand mills were also buying in considerable quantities. Several American buyers, who left the States before the restriction on export of wool was imposed, were present, but did not operate. Buyers state that they are well satisled with tho way the wool has opened up, though some of them regard the fleeces as being rather heavy in grease. There was very keen demand for all finer qualities, and crossbred Merinos and sold up to 12Jd per lb. Coarser varieties, when bright mid clean, sold up to lHd, and medium coarse wool up to lOd. Bush woolj, which are fortunately showing considerable improvement each season, sold well at 7d to Bd, while bellies and pieces, for which New Zealand mills competed keenly, sold at good prices. Auckland wool* are not supposed to be up to tho standard of southern catalogues in quality, but prices certainly compared very favourably with those received at the opening sales in the. south. Prices received in comparison with those of last year are as follows, last year's prices being given first: Fine, half-bred, lOd to 12|d, lid to 133 d; line crossbred, 9d to Hid, lOd to 12d; medium crossbred, B|d to Did, Od to lOJd; coarse crossbred, Lincoln, Sd to B"*d, Sd to lOJd; inferior log stained, 7Jd to 73d, 7£d to BJd; first pieces, GSd to 7d, second pieces and bellies, 5(1 to Od, 5Jd to GJd; crutchings, (id to 6Jd, 7d to B}d; locks, 4d to 4Jd, id to sd.
