THE WALKURE.
To the Editor, Sir,—We are in receipt of a Home shipping journal, which contains an account of the arrival of the German liner Walkure at New 'Plymouth. The account states as follows:—"How much importance was attached to this event may he judged by the fact that the local papers devoted a considerable space to it, while one of them published a sepecial illustrated supplement containing views of the vessels lying alongside the wharf. The -vessel's arrival created great enthusiasm and the occasion was celebrated by giving a public luncheon to the captain and officers, the gathering including all the public men of the district. Thus, the company owning the Walkure have at one stroke got their name before the business community of New Zealand. It is a pity that some British line could not have arranged to secure the credit for initiating a movement which is so evidently regarded locally as of great significance." As commissioners of trade for the Port of Hull and Bafnsley and North Eastern Railway Companies, wo wish to state that this vessel was on charter to the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, and loaded her cargo in our (Alexander Docks, Hull. The Germans had nothing whatever to do with the matter, excepting that it happened to be a German boat that was chartered for the business. ' •">•'-< In all fairness to British shipping interests, wo shall be glad if you will give tliis matter due publicity.—We are, etc., J. A. REDPATH & SONS Christchurch and London. November 24.
