Strickland, addressing the Local Government Conference, refrained from mentioning local subjects, and asked the conference to remember that the Empire was at war, and to give the King's Ministers every support. None could have the least doubt of the eventual result of the war, but there was great doubt as to its probable duration. "We cannot all fight," he said, "hut by putting our shoulders to the wheel it may be brought to a more rapid conclusion." NAVAL DOCKYARDS STRIKE. REACTS OX THE WORKERS.
MINISTER PLACES WORK ELSEWHERE. Received 24, 9.10 p.m. .Sydney, November 24. The dockyard strike has not been settled. A mass meeting of shipwrights decided to adhere to the society's rules, providing for double pay for night work. Melbourne, November 24. Mr. Pearce states that he does not intend to continue the night shift at Cockatoo Island, and thus will have to get a large part of the work done elsewhere. NAVAL WORKS STOPPED. Sydney, November 24. One hundred and fifty men are idle in the dockyard, and this is interfering with the docking of the warships and fitting-up of the transports. LOANS FOR AUSTRALIA. Melbourne, November 24. In reference to yesterday's London cable Mr Fisher points out that Australia is obtaining eighteen millions from the British war loan to meet naval and military expenditure, also eighteen millions which the Commonwealth has arranged to obtain for the States for developmental purposes. RAIDS ON GERMAN CLUBS. NOTHING INCRIMINATING. j Received 25, 1.20 a.m. Sydney, November 25. The police report that the raids on German clubs resulted in nothing in- | criminating being found.
