DISTRICT NEWS.
* KAPOXGA. The Kaponga Brass Band's plain and fancy dress ball was lield on Thursday night in aid of new uniforms. About 150 attended, the floor being fully taxed. There was a good sprinkling of fancy costumes, some of which were very original. 'Mrs L. Bullock secured the prize for the ladies, in a costume, representing England, France, Belgium, 'Russia and Scrvia, while Mr. J. Ilammcrsley carried off the gentlemen's (a Maori). The music, which was of a very high order, was supplied by the band, patrons being loud in their praise of its excellence. This should be very encouraging to the conductor, Mr. F. Woods. Extras were played by the following: Misses Melville,' Scott, Bower, and Mrs Hartley. Bandsmen T. Preeco and F. Bertie carried out the duties of M.C.'s in their well-known style. The catering was in the hands of our local confectioners, Messrs Allen Bros., and was of their usual excellence. About €l2 ins was taken at the door, and the committee expects to net about £S after paying all expenses. The lloor was in tiptop order, and a most pleasant evening wa s spent by all. The prizes for costumes were donated by '.Messrs Spence for the ladies and Allen Bros, for the gent's, the prizes being goods to the value of 10s fid. During the evening the chairman of the baud, Mr !A. IT. fluy. thanked all those present for the' splendid support given, especially as the war had made so many calls of late. He also thanked those ladies who played the extras, and intimated that the band would give a series of socials during the winter months.
