■ENGLISH MISSIONARY ILL-TREATED.
STRIPPED AND BEATEN BY GERMANS. Received 23, 1.40 a.m. Sydney, November 22. The Telegraph's Raboul correspondent reports that Mr. Cox, an English missionary, arrived in a serious condition, after brutal treatment at the hands of the Germans in New Ireland. Mr. Cox states that he was making his periodical visit, and was spending the night with the German missionary. While chatting on the verandah, five armed and masked Germans appeared, and accused Mr. Cox of conveying information of the forces at Rabaul. He protested his innocence, but was denuded of his clothing, flogged with a cane, put into his boat in a semiconscious condition, and ordered to return to Rabaul for medical attention. A punitive expedition has left to investigate. SYDNEY WAR FUNDS. MORE MEN AVAILABLE. Sydney, November 21. The war funds" have reached a total of £872,279. Melbourne, November 21. Asked whether the quota of troops Australia is sending was sufficient, Mr Fisher replied that lie would send all that were necessary and more than were asked for.
NEW GUINEA. BRITISH CONSUL RECOVERED FROM CAPTIVITY. Sydney, November 21. i The whereabouts of Mr Jolly, British | Consul at Rabaul, have been ascertained. It appears that immediately the war broke out the Germans took Mr Jolly to Kaeweing, 170 miles from Rabaul. An cxpediton left on October 10 with a machine-gun and a threepounder. A few shots of the latter led the townspeople to show the white flag. A party landed and posted proclamations and the Germans promised to return Mr Jolly the following morning. Leaving a garrison the party sailed for Garden Island and captured three vessels containing quantities of dynamite. WILDING AT THE FRONT. Received 22, 4.45 p.m. Melbourne, November 21. Mr Fisher, speaking at the Tennis Association luncheon, on the occasion of the annual inter-State championship, raised loud cheers, by referring to Wilding's presence at the front.
