HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The New Plymouth High School Boys' annual sports were held yesterday at the school, and were responsible for bringing together probably the largest assemblage of parents, ex-pupils, pupils, and well-wishers that the school ground has ever accommodated, the visitors hailing from all parts of the province. The aportg wc re in every way excellent, and the conduct of them a distinct credit to all concerned. The programme of events was such as would have kept an athletic club busy for two or three days, but the fine discipline of the school made it possible to run off the events to time, despite the very large fields. Some idea of the task can be gathered from the fact that there were 'l7 events, in some of which were eight heats, and in all there were 1-87 competitors, the long-distance events drawing fields of over forty. The keenness evinced by the boys was remarkable, and the spectators were treated to a fine day's sport, in which the interest was never allowed to ilag. The ground was good, and well marked off, the sprint events being run between tapes. The best performance of the day, .perhaps, was that of the winner of the high jump, who put up the excellent record of sft. s%in. The enjoyment of the visitors was enhanced by the presence of Mrs. Woods' excellent orchestra, and by the fact that all were the guests at afternoon tea of the school, this department being capably managed by Mrs. Moyes and a strong committee of other ladies, who took hourly turns. The school is to be congratulated upon the continued success of the gathering.
