GENERAL TELEGRAMS.

THE CAPTURE OF HACKETT. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Hamilton, Xovembof it. The prisoner Hackett, who jumped from a train at Te Kuiti on Oetober 30 while being conveyed from New Plymouth to Hamilton, where lie was to be charged with a series of false pretences, was captured by the ltotorua police at Atuinmri, some miles from Rotorua, yesterday. The police did excellent work, tracing the man from Otorohanga right through the back country to Taupo, with which country Hackett was thoroughly familiar. Yesterday he boarded the Taupo Totara Timber Company's private train at Ifokai, on the Putaniru line, but instead) of going right through lie jumped off at a bridge over the Waikato River, and made towards 'Ataimuri. Here this Rotorua police, who were on the look-out, picked up the trail and arrested him. Hackett allowed no signs of privations. From reports received from the police it is probable the list of charges against him will be considerably increased as a result of his dash for freedom.

VALUATION COMMISSION. Wellington, November 14. The Valuation Commission will consist of Messrs t. V. Martin (Wellington), chairman, Kwen Campbell (Wanganui) and Jas. Rutherford (Auckland), and will enquire into the grievances of people who consider that they have been 'unfairly treated in the valuation of

[ their property ,and make rooommendah.ions. particularly with regard to a 'better form of appeal than is provided by the Assessment Court. TARRED AND FEATHERED. Rotorua, November 14. The domestic relations and financial circumstances of a recent arrival in Rotorua have of late aroused considerable excitement in the town, and about 11 o'clock last night a large crowd visited a house and tarred and feathered the object of their resentment. The police are taking action.
