THE EDITORIAL CHAIR RE NEIGHBORS HALE AND WHITE.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Your appeal to "Gentlemen" in Editorial Koto to my letter, in the issue of tlin Kith hist. 1 rise to honor. A unit of the public, grateful for your "neutral and impartial auspices," with deference T remind you that, to be an "umpire," however, you would need to k/iow bow the game'has been played. Without trespass, or involving you, T may say that your suggestion to "live like good neighbors'' has been anticipated by me, under a condition of incompatibility of views on phases of life by taking the neutral stand of letting Mr. Hale and household severely alone. This, at Jcast, is an attitude that should be harmless and safe; and all that has been looked for in response is similar treatment. This refers to "private'' life. As to "public" life, covering what pertains to public conduct, that is another matter. All such should submit to "public ventilation." Without such modifying and regulating influence, into what undesirable results might we not be lured by other misguiding influences? Through confounding and confusing (the habit is all too common) private and public matters, personalities creep in, and only too often bring rancour. I am not sermonising—only doing my best to be practical. Meanwhile, 1. am publicly charged by Mr. Hale with a heinous and contemptible offence. let Mr. Hale particularlv mark mv delinition. The fair question is now before him: "By whose instigation" am 1 connected with the act of persistently attempting to get the council employee discharged? Under the extended auspices of your editorial neutralitv, T await an answer in the name of British fair play. With thankful recognition of your good offices, Mr. Editor. — I am, etc., BENOXI WITITK Lower Mangorei, November 1-1, 1914.
