PAINTERS' AWARD. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Stratford, Yesterday. The. conference of the blaster Painters and Painters' Union was held here yesterday, wlien an agreement was arrived at * for submission to the Conciliation Court. It was also agreed that, owing to t"ne war. no increase in wages be asked for sis months, when the matter will be further considered at another conference. There was an amicable spirit between masters and men.
A BUNGLED BUSINESS. Wellington, Yesterday. When a young man was charged at 1.1.0 Magistrate's Court with llavimg failed to attend parades, it transpired that be was on duty at the time guarding German prisoners on Somes Island. Counsel for defendant strongly criticised the action of the Department. The magistrate dismissed the information, but refused to allow costs, though he agreed that a serious blunder had been made. It is understood that the officials (responsible for the prosecution were not awari that the defendant was serving on Sonie3 Uland, as lie signed on under different authorities and did not reply to the notifications served on him re non-attendance at parades.
