OPUNAKE. From our own correspondent.) On Wednesday evening a large number of settlers and townsmen assembled in the Club Hotel to bid farewell to Mr E. Crockett, late stock inspector. Mr. Crockett was presented with a gold albert and sovereign ease. Mr R. Maefle made the presentation. Mr. Crockett baa suffered from ill-health lately, and the wish was expressed by those present that the change to Wanganui will improve his health. The annual meeting of the Horticultural Society was held on Wednesday evening. The president (Mr. M. J. Brennan) occupied the chair. The annual balance sheet showed a credit of £\ 17s Od. The autumn show will be held on February 16. Mr. Marshall was elected secretary, vice Rev. 0. M. Stent, who was unanimously praised for the excellent work he had done on behalf of th« Society.

. .\VAIONGONA On Friday night, November 6th, a concert and dance were hold in ihc local school in aid of the prize fund. Although the weather was very unsettled, there was a good attendance. Everything went off without a hitclu and the function proved very successful. The first part of the programme was a cantata by the schoolchildren, "Blossomland," which was thoroughly enjoyed and reflected great credit on our worthy teacher and her pupils. The room iiad been tastefully decorated with flowers and represented the title of the cantata splendidly. The second part consisted of songs and recitations, which were all well received. 1 he first item was a song by little Miss Mavis O'Connor, "Tipperary," which delighted the audience, and she had to respond to an necore. Recitation, "The Inventor's Wife," Miss Olive Hine; song, "The Bridge," Mrs Lumsden; recitation "We Die," Mr B. Luke, and to a response "Th 3 Ooekie's Spell"; song "Island of Dreams," Mrs OlConnor; recitation, "The Belief of Ladysmith," Mr Lumsden, thi3 and Mr Luke's rendering of "We Die," was very patriotic. Miss HusscSl x playcd the accompaniments for the cantata, solos and ih'irnses, and Miss Foster for second part of the programme. 7. he chairman (Mr O'Conno.-). at the conclusion of the concert, heartily thanked all ihose who had so willingly come forward and helped to make the function so successful. Supper, which had been kindly provided by the ladies of the district, was then banded round, and afti.-v a short interval the room was cVnired for dancing, young and old seeming to have a real good time and keeping things moving merrily till one o'clock am.
