GERMANS ON DEFENSIVE.
A DESPERATE BATTLE, Petrograd, November i. Official: The Germans on the East Prussian front are on the defensive. The Russians have advanced in some districts, and captured two guns and prisoners. South-oast of Kielce, the Russians took three 'Austrian cannon, five mitrailleuses, and 1500 prisoners. The enemy is only retaining his position on the lower course of the Opatow. The Russians further progressed on the left bank of the San. A desperate battle, favorable to the Russians, continues in the Niako district (North Galieia). London, November 4. The Frankfurter Zeitung defines the German retreat in Russia as a strategical measure not caused by a military failure.'
