THE HORRORS OF FIGHTING. INCREASED BY EAIILY WINTER. CERJIANS STEADILY RETREATING. London, November 1. The early winter, with heavy rain, ijleet, and snow, is adding to the horrors of the lighting in Poland. The mud in the trenches reaches to the Knees, and the men, forced to remain inactive, ar« chilled to the bones. South o£ Warsaw the ground is so soft that the guns and transport waggons constantly stick, and aro abandoned. Amsterdam, November 1. The official ■ statement from Berlin is that the situation westward of Warsaw is still undecided. The Russians are slowly pursuing ua, and we are still drawing up in battle array. Petrograd, November 1.
Official: The German attempt on the Eastf Prussian front to break through the centre of the fortilied position near Bakolarjevo has failed, after live days' fruitless attacks. The Germans sullered tremendous losses. There'are large heaps of dead fronting our trenches. We are advancing in several districts on the East Prussian front.
Tlie Russians beyond the Vistula are firmly occupying the position Lenevies-Lodz-Ostrovec. The situation in Galicia is unchanged. Petrograd, November 1. The Russians captured, between Corbatka, Ilza,. and the Vistula, in the four days ended October -28, 82 officers and SOW) men, belonging ehiellv to the sth Hungarian Corps, aiso 2-1 Maxims. The Austrians, retreating, are between the Vistula and Radoni, having separated from the Germans, the latter retreating westward, l)ut the 7th Austrian cavalry division is still with liie Germans, covering their retreat.
