LAWN TENNIS.

| NEW PLYMOUTH CIO. • Tlio New Plymouth Lawn Tenuis and Croquet Chub's lawns were opened for j p:ay on Saturday afternoon. There was ! no "opening ceremony," but the large , number of players had a good aflerj liotou's play on splendid lawns under the i best of weather conditions. In spite of I tlie fact tiiat this was the earliest start 1 for many years 'past, the lawns were in 'i capital condition, and thanks to the care | bestowed on them <iuriug the winter by Caretaker Cole, it is doubtful if they have ever .before looked better at this period. This is a happy augury for the I coining season, particularly as the anj nua-i Taranaki tourmnu-nt will be held j.on the club's courts on January 14, 15, and If!. By this time the lawns slurnld Ibe in faultless order. In the meantime ' plav will continue at the discretion of ] the committee until early in November, | and from that time the courts will be I available every day . An excellent aftcrj 'noon tea was provided on Saturday by the members of tile ladies' committee.

THE TIRONOA CLUB. NEW LAWNS TESTED. Advantage was taken of the holiday yesterday to test the three new court:! which the Tironga Club has laid down at Vogi'ltown, on the section acquired last year. No oliicial notice of play had been sent to this meniliers, but those residing near at haul arranged to meet en the gi'uun ! yesterday, there being ('ght lailies and six gint'emen present, p.aying taking place i n only one court. It was a matter of general surprise that t'iie courts wire in such capital order, far better than was expected, considering how recently they had been laid down. It is expected that the grounds .committee will decide this iveek when the oliicial opening will take place, and the date will be duly notified. The club is to be congratuhited on the result of its enterprise, and the new ground should prove another attraction lo the Vogcltown district.
