'J—i FORT 'CHATjMERS SEAT. By Tclejrapt— L'er Press Asswi*tion. Dtmedin, Last Night. Jlr G. A. Thomson announces his candidature for the Port Chalmers ,«eat' in Labor interests. EGMONT. The Liberal candidate (Mr. Astlmry) spoke at Kaponga on Thursday, a fair number of electors being present. The carndidatc spoke forcibly on 'the appointments, administration and general policy of the Government, criticising Mr. 'iMaiiSCy wiy severely. At the close of an attentive meeting a Vote of thanks, on the motion of Mr A. If. Grey, and seconded by Mr. Melville, was curried by .icchuuition; a vote of thinks to Mr. Bctts, who oe::\;ned the (hair, following. At the close of the meeting a strong committee was appointed to organise in the town. At Mangatoki on Wednesday evening Mr. Astbury spoke to a good meeting. Before dealing with the usual matters the speaker related now on the occasion of his first contest a number of settlers met him at that hall and decided that he should contest the Hawera seat. On that occasion Mangatoki gave him a n.ajority over the combined total of his two opponents, and he had since wondered why Mangatoki opinion had changed so much and become so conservative. Presumably on account of the chango of residents, and li-is social interests concentrating more on Mahoe might have had something to do with it. He hoped that the coming contest would prove that Mangatoki had decided to return to their allegiance to the Liberal cause. At the conclusion of the usual addres, no questions being asked, the usual votes of thanks to- the speaker and chairman were carriedunanimously. A number subsequently remained, and a committee was formed to further the candidate's interests.
