BOWLING.
llawera< Club has now nearly 90 members. •. A new club is projected at Wanganui East, and another at Brunswick. I Wanganui Centre is arranging a aeries of contests. Waverley and Patea clubs and Marton and Taihape clubs will play their matches at Wanganui. The Association's new rule regarding the mat is not ao dear as it might be. It says: "The player, while delivering his bowl, must have a portion of one or both feet on the mat." This is capable of a variety of interpretations, and then the question arises, who is to decide? besides, a player may have a portion of "one or both feet on the mat," and still do the things that are objected to as giving an unfair advantage; and what is even worse, may still do a great deal of harm to the. green. Hawera Club, in a set of new rules issued just before the Association rule was promulgated, endeavored to deal willi the problem in the interests of the green, and provided that "every player . . . shall ao stand on tlie mat, that in delivering a bowl hia right foot shall not be less than six inches within the fore edge of the mat," and the mats have been marked so that the player Shall ibe able ito see easily the six-inch mark. Perhaps it is unjustifiable egotism, but we think the Hawera Club has dealt with the matter more practically than the Association.. At any rate, if players observe the rule and the foot on which the pressure comes is wholly on tlio mat when the bowl is being deliveied, the green will get the best possible protection.—Star.
