Fighting in France
A BRILLIANT SUCCESS. j GERMAN RIGHT HURLED BACK. Received 13, 1.30 a.m. London, October 12. The Daily Mail's Paris correspondent' reports that the desperate battle was fought on Tuesday to tho northwards •was a brilliant success, the Germans being driven back for 13 miles, and losing 12,000 killed and wounded. The Allied cavalry was greatly ham- ■ pored by miles of hop gardens. "SCEX.ES OP BLACK DESTRUCTION." A LULL IN FRANCE. Received 13, 12.5 a.m. London, October 12. The Press Bureau publishes a communication from t'.'.e French headquarters, which mentions that there was a lull in the operations on our immediate front pending the general advaneo at Arras. The Germans are well supplied with artillery, which was particularly violent on Tuesday and Wednesday, but with no success. The only place where they gained ground was at Roye, where tingains were not worth a tithe of the cost of men and material. The towns on the battle lino are now scenes of black destruction. Arras has been wrecked, Albert is non-existent, and Douai has been half burned down. "NOTHING FRESH." Received 12, 0.20 p.m. Faris, October 12. An official communique issued at midnight says:—"There is nothing fresh to ) report, except that a flag has been captured near Lassigny. The general operations of the day are satisfactory." BOMBS DROPPED IN PARIS. London, October 11. Two German aeroplanes dropped 20 bombs on ■Paris, killing three persons and wounding fourteen. One bomh fell on the roof of Notre Dame, but did not burst. Paris, October 11. Tho cavalry during the battle of the Aisne, bored by inaction, petitioned General Allenby to be allowed to serve in the trenches. As their carbines wcra ■useless. General Allenby has armed onc■third of the cavalry with rifles and bayonets similarly to the mounted infantry in South Africa. Bordeaux, October 11. Five hundred German prisoners lave been sent to Morocco.
