EMPIRE PICTURES. Picture patrons enjoyed last night two very line dramas, of compelling human interest. Tho Broncho series, "The Silent Witness," tella a story that is remarkably true to life, and which, incidentally, brings to notice the wonderful dictaphone, used in many American and other oflices in connection with correspondence. This machine records voices in the same way its a phonograph, and reproduces them at the will of the typist who wishes to transfer the spoken letter or instruction to the letter-form. In this case John Fowncs is dictating into the dictaphone at night, when he is disturbed by a recently-discharged employee, and as a result of a quarrel commits murder. The hero of tile story is arrested for murder, for he heard the shots and rushed to the office, and was found there when the police arrived. It was known, of course, that the hero, Tom, and the dead man had been enemies a 3 a result of rivalry in their attentions to a woman. This, woman is now engaged in a dictaphone factory, scraping records. In (he course of her work she conies upon the identical le!eoid which was made by the machine in Howiies' Oiliee when tin- murder took place, and. she is thus able to clear ber lover by proving the identity of the man who entered the room.
