PHYSICAL CULTURE.

A CREDITABLE KXHIBITBON.
Tliere was a good attendan«e ol tbe public yesterday at the Keereation Grounds, where tho tcache-re under the Taranaki Education Board who,aire being instructed by tho Director of Physical Culture and his assistants in tin scheme of physical exercises designed to form part of tho daily worik in the schools of the Dominion, gave a public display of the various exorcises, much to the delight of those present. Considering that the course of instruction has so far only extended orcr ten days in Now Plymouth, tho exhibition boro flattering testimony not onl|y to the intelligence of'the teachers, but also to their icitlhusiasni and receptive powers of readily mastering tho details of technical wo:'k. The movements throughout were performed ith accuracy and i:reciaion, and the ladies are especially deserving of (praise for tho graceful way in which they went tihrougjh their allotted exercises.
The exhibition commenced with a massed march, Mr. Koyd Garlick being in command. The various movements in single file, pairs and fours were all neatly executed, ami the diagonal march elicited hearty applause from the spectators. This was followed by a. demonstration given by the junior lad/ teachers, consisting of elementary exercises controlled by Mi<ss Greenwood, anl c.voking well-merited evidence of appreciation. The second assistants (ladies) then gave a very finished) demonstration of arm exercises, balancing, and trum-v turning, under the direction of Mr. Longworth. The effect produced was very pleasing, all the movements being well in unison and credita/bly precise, 'After V.aJf-an-houT's interval for afternoon tea, the junior mala teachers went through shoulder-blade and aMominal exercises, Mr. Jackson taking charge. Then,, also wora well done, and demonstrated their utility as part of the general scheme of training. The senior lady teachers next gave an interesting display of figure marching, Miss Heritage bdng in e-oinmnnd. This display alsj elicited much applause. Then came the most imposing display of all, that by the massed squads, each playing a different game under its own instructor, the spoetators being greatly pleased. The finale was the massed squads (frill, which is 1(0 be carried out each day in all tho schools. Mr. Just, the senior inspector and instructor, took command, and though he had taken no part in tho instruction of the teachers, they rcaany chqye l his word of command, thereby proving that tho dotaila of the system can be carried out I>y any qualified peTson. Mr. Itoyd Garlick was present and exercised a general supervision. The hearty manifestations of approval shown by those present must have been very gratifying to -both tho instructors and the teachers, there being 210 of the Utter 07i parade. The schoolmittTess'M and their instructress, Miss Blackburn, also took part in the display, the former having volunteered to do so.
One of the objects of the display was to help the Patriotic Fund, the proceeds being devoted thereto, anil aa a result thoro will be about £25 to hand over.
His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. E. WiLson) thanked the teaohcrs antf instructors for giving such an excellent demonstration for so laudable an object, an complimented thorn warmly on their performance.
A SOCIAL EVENING. At the Good Templar H;dl in tho evening the teachers had a most enjovalilo gathering, presided over by Mr. Dempsey. Thei first part lof the 'entertainment consisted of a concert, the items of which were as follows:—i'i.iri) solo, Mias Winfield; song, Mr. Jibycnberg; song, Miss Auld; chorus, Mr. Mackie's party; song, Mrs. Wilkes: recitation, Mr. Buchler; so*g, Mr. Manning; song, Miss Thompson; recitation, Mr. Haworth; song, Sliss Williams; song, Mr. Longworth; quintette, Mr. Buchler's party; aong, Mr. Bary; clubswinging, Mr. Turner; recitation, Mr. 'Mills; hornpipe, Mr. Eggleton; song, At.'. Just; chorus, Mr. Mae'kie'* party; liaka; Mr, Ilaworth's party. - A feature of the entertainment that wag not down on the programme was a very clever topical recitation by {Mr. Dcmpsey, the various liits being greatly enjoyed and causing hearty laughter. The concert was followed s>y a dance, which was kept up till jjome time afteir midnight. The intermixture o 1 the physical drill costumes of the ladies with the brighter colors of the evening toilettes produced a most attractive scene, and the dancing was thoroughly enjoyed by aJI present.
