The High Commissioner reports under date London, October 5, (4.15 p.m.): Official.—The battle of Augustow ended on Saturday in a victory for the Russians. The German defeat was complete and the enemy is now in disorderly retreat towards the frontier of Prussia. The Russians aro vigorously pursuing. On the left bank of the Vistula and in Galicia the situation is unchanged. Official.—Paris reports: "On our left wing a battle is in full progress in tho Arras district. The fighting between the ripper valley of the Jvre and the Somme and between the Somme and the Aisne is less violent. [Progress has been made in the Soissons region, where the enemy's trenches have been taken."
