Unable to use their heavy guns in the hiarshy ground, the German infantry and machine-guns advanced to within lour miles of the fortress.
The Russians sortied at night, and enveloped both wings. The fortress guns mowed down the German masses in the centre. Simultaneously tne infantry attacked the wings, and after 30 hours' fighting the Germans were routed.. All their heavy guns were captured.

After the Germans' second attempt to cross the Nienicn, they made a last desperate effort in the evening. Columns in close formation proceeded to the crossing again, but every man was mowed down by the machine-guns. Finally the German batteries were silenced, and the enemy retreated for eight miles, the Cossacks crossing in the enemy's pontoons and pursuing and harassing them.
One account states that 20,000 German corpses floated down the Niemen.

After the defeat at Ossowiee, the Germans were hurled back on Grahvo. The road to that place was strewn with corpses.
The capture of the Jaroslav forts was due to the heroism of a young Jewish, private, who was taken prisoner and conveyed to a place of immense, strategic importance.. He secretly sketched the fortifications of the enemy's position, and escaped to the Russian lines. The attack resulted in the capture of the forts. The Jew was severely wounded.

Before lie departed for the front, the Czar called out the reserves. Over eight million Russians are now mobilised.

Details of the Germans' repeated attempts to cross the Niemen northwards of Grodno show that tho Russian rearguards were transferred on the 23rd to the right bank of tho river. The Germans, not having noticed signs of opposition, constructed pontoons and poured across. Cleverly-screened Rus--BiaßL_guna opened a concentrated lire, sweeping the Germans by hundreds into the river. A prolonged artillery duel followed. The Germans again attempted to cross, but none readied the opposite bank. THE BATTLE OF SUWALKI. GERMANS CLAIM A COMPLETE VICTORY. ABSOLUTE DENIAL OE RUSSIAN ACCOUNTS. Received 5, 10 p.m. Amsterdam, October 5. An official statement at Berlin claims the complete defeat of the Russians in the battle at Suwalki, and that 3000 prisoners, 18 guns, many machine-guns, and much transport material were captured. (The town of Suwalki lies about 100 miles south-cast of the German fortress of Koenigsberg, and the same distance east of Allerstein, whero the Russian invasion of East Prussia was checked ;>t an early stage of the war. The line of German retreat from Augustow to Suwalki lay almost due north. The two places are 20 miles apart. Fifty miles west of Suwalki, across Hie East Prussian border, stands the German furtive of Lol/.en.)
