ENTERTAINMENTS.
THE UAA'uiiiS.* :
A BRIGHT AND EX'OELLJiNT HN'TEHTAIJM MEN T.
Comparisons, someone has said are odious, but in these times of competition in the world of entertainment comparison* are unavoidable, "i'lio Dandies" stand the test of comparison, and come out of it with .(lying Co [ o r 3 M quite the .beat party of entertainer* that set a programme before New Plymouth lheatrc-goer s , fur a mmiibor of years these are the "Orange Danu.es," so-called from the predominant color in the costuming, and' it is safe to say that the "Orange Dandies" will lo"~ mid pleasantly remembered. 'lne scheme of the entertainment was popularised by blie "Scarlet Trouliadours," ot delightful memory, and possibly no better idea, of Hie programme last night can be given than iby saying that the delights of tlio "Scarlet" entertainers were revived and 1 cnlianced. "The Dandies" are clever, bright, (breezy, musical, fine rocalwU, laughter-makers and—c.ean. There's not one questionable word, phrase or gesture in the whole long_ programme of music and merrymaking, not one suggestion savorin'o of the double entendre which some people hud indispensable to stage humor yet the house rippled, swayed, roared wita laughter just as these consummate artists willed. "The Dandies" are to give us two more programmes—ito-niwht and to-monow niglit l —and their clever entertainment should draw bigger audiences eadh time. Whilst the members individually are leaders in their own particular sphere, there is no question that the concerted vocal work is an outstanding feature, duets, triort, quartettes _ and choruses being given with exquisite sweetness and real unison, and m every single item the enunciation is remarkable, pvery word jbeing easily followed. The duet "Barcarolle" (froin "Tales of 'Hoffmann") 6un«r by Misses Walker (soprano) and Bradford (contralto) \va ti swcutly sung, and with the vocal accompaniment by the maJe quartet produced the gem of the concerted work. Miss Bradford's contralto voice was perfectly attuned and controlled In "To-night," and tiho audience was delighted willi Miss Walker's soprano solo, "Gay Butterfly." The third lady is Miss Naomi McQuoin, u charming soubrette and daneeuse, who took charge of her audience in "Flies Around a honey-pot" (encore, "Naughty Boy,") and in the duet with Mr. George Taylor, "Would You Miss Me?" in addition to which she was associated with the success of several other numibeM. The "business" and acting; in "The Mosquito," "I'd like to gaze upon your sunshade" and similar items was clover, whilst Mr. Taylor and Miss MeQuoin fairly convulsed the audience in their presentation of si 6oeiety couple at a society tall. Mr. Taylor sang "Beautiful 'Girlie Girls" in, telling style, and gave fox an encore .the old' favorite "Father O'flynn." Encores were the order of the night. Mr. Andrew Pago is a bright comedian, who can use his voice and bis limbs in fun-making, as he showed in "I Beg Your Pardon," and repeat songs; and, Mr. Ilarry Webster, a littlo imore boisterous, i' s just as bright and clever. Mr. David Lyle .possesses tho tenor voice of the" troupe, easily produced, ringing a.nd resonant, and his "T hear you calling ine," waß a treat, earning an encore, to which bo gave a now patriotic numlber, "Sons of Kmipire." Mr. Roland Henry supplied seme clever humorous monologues. The "musical dinner" at the clo.?e was cleverly conceived, and 1 proved tho ver- ■ sality of tbe performers. It is not only the rendition of the items'that pleases* it. is the brightness of their words, and the lightsome lilt of tbe inuaic; altogether one of the brightest and beat entertainments it has beeiu New Plymouth's lot to enjoy.
