The New Zealand and African Steamship Co. has received advice by cabla from London stating that the British Government lias fixed the rate of freight on beef and mutton from South America to London at %d per pound. It is intercsting to note that the present rates from New Zealand are a halfpenny per pound on beef, and nine-sixteenths of & penny on mutton, although the meat baa to.be carried twice as far in the case of New Zealand. Even if the suggested war surtax of 25 per cent, on freights we*e imposed, the rates from New Zealand would still bo lower than thoseI*- 1 *- from South America to Britain.
