TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL
SPECIAL MPETIXG. A special meeting of tihe Taranaki County Council 1 was held yesterday morning, there being present tihe «hairman (Mr J. Brown), Crs. Hopson. Stevens, Billing, J. Andrews, McAflum, Morton. and Andrews. A MERGING ORDER. 'The chairman formaly moved the confirmation of the special order passed by the Council merging a portion of the lloa Road 'district into the county. Or. llopson protested again3t the merger which, lie said, had been voted against toy a majority of ihe ratepayers concerned. Or. Stevens considered, r the move u very wise one. The <3*airman pointed out that those ratepayers who had withdrawn their epposition to the merger were quitj within their rights. The opinion of Mr ■ Martin had been obtained, and it upheld the merger. Cr McAUum said that hig experience was that county nile was preferable to read district rule. He considered that the loads in tihe Taranaki county were in much better order than elsewhere. Cr Morton pointed out tnat by taking ever parls of road districts the Council would Increase its expenditure on bvereads. He was ■confident that the liorger was well adviswl, and that in tune to come other portions would come in. The chairman remarked that probably the county's overdraft would be increased, "but the ratepayers would get &ood value for their money. On a division, the motion was caxlied, only Crs. Hopsfn and Billing voting ■against it.
GENERAL. Cr. McAllum moved that 170 yards of crushed, metal 'be provided for work recommended by the Omat:i foreman. The motion was carried, it being arranged Hat the 'builders should be crushed at Tapuae, the chairman being authorised to deal with the matter. The tender of T. and It. Parkin for carting 40t> yards of metal to the crusher at Tapuae and from thence on to the road, was accepted, at 5g 8d per Or McAlium brought up the question of repairing the Beach road so as to lessen the cost of carting boulders; also as to fixing a site for the crusher. — Left for the chairman to inspect. A ecmphmt relative to the roller driver was left in the chairman's hands tc deal with. After luncheon, the Councillors, together with the engineers and the bor®igh engineer, visited the Waiwakaiho bridge with reference to taking steps to overcome the scouring of th bridge foundations liy the river.
