"THE VALLEY OF DEATH." . AUSTRIAN'S SHELLED IN A GORGE. DEAD COVER THE SLOPES IN HEAPS. AN ABSOLUTE SURRENDER. AX AUSTRIAN GENERAL'S SUICIDE. Received 15, 9.20 p.m. Petrograd, Sept. 14 (evening). A wounded officer from the fight south of Zamosti describes the attack on 15,000 Austrians, who were mostly in a deeply-wooded gorge. The Russians shelled the gorge, their shrapnel bursting with marvellous accuracy. Then the infantry stormed the position. Though badly cut up by the Austrian guns, another party »f infantry stormed from the flank, and the Austrians surrendered almost immediately. The gorge was filled With dead lying in heaps on the slopes. The Russians named it "The Valley of Death." The Austrian general commanding the division watched his men disarmed. But presently, when the Austrian standard was brought from the gorge, the general (h'ciy a revolver and committed suicide. THE CZAR'S LEGIONS. RUSSIAN REVERSE IN EAST PRUSSIA.
OUTNUMBERED BY THE GERMANS. Petrograd, September 14. The necessity of developing the attack in Galicia temporarily prevented having a sufficient force in East Prussia to continue the invasion, and General Rennenkampf suspended his march on the line [Oerdauen-Labiau. The Germans took the. offensive on the 7th against the left wing, causing a retreat. General Rennenkampf resumed the offensive at certain points on the Sth, but discovered that the Germans greatly outnumbered the Russians. The fighting continues.
TO DIVIDE RUSSIAN ATTENTION. GERMANS THREATEN TILSIT. Petrograd, September 14. Germany is sending strong reinforceto Memel by sea to threate* Tilsit. (Tilsit, on the Memel, was recently owupied by the Russians.)
A GERMAN ARMY DEFEATED. RUSSIANS RESUME TIIE OFFENSIVE SIEGE OF KOENIGSBERG BEGINS. GERMAN LOSSES 50,000. ENORMOUS RUSSIAN CAPTURES OF GUNS. Received 15, 11.10 p.m. London, September 14. The Russian Embassy says that the German army commanded by Genera? Uindenburg was defeated near Mlawa. The Germans are now evacuating Poland. j The Russians have resumed the offensive in Prussia, commencing the siege of Kocnigsberg. German losses amounted to «),000.
(Mlawa is a town of 14,000 people, in Russian Poland, probably 60 miles eastward of the Russo-German frontier.) I'etrograd, September 14. An official statement is made that the Russian forces operating against the Austrians and Germans took 180 prisoners, 450 field guns, 1000 pieces of fortress artillery, 4000 transport wagons, 12 flags, Mid seven aeroplanes.
FOURFOLD DESCENT ON BERLIN. DISPOSITION OF THE RUSSIAN FORCES. Received 15, 11.10 p.m. London, September 14. Rome reports say that four armies are hastening to invade Germany. Two are in East Prussia, a third at Posen, and the fourth and'strongest in Lower Silesia.
WHITE FLAG TREACHERY. RUSSIAN SOLDIERS KILLED. Received 10, 12.35 a.m. Petrograd, September 14. A Zeppelin, flying 500 ft high, approached Vollau, on the Prussian irontier, Russian artillery damaged three motors, but the fourth kept the Zeppelin going until the infantry opened five, when the Zeppelin hoisted the white flag. The infantry ceased fire, but the Zeppelin dropped four bombs, killing 23 and wounding 00. The artillery then brought the Zeppelin down, and eight [Germans were captured.
