HUNT CLUB RACES.

AN MNJOYAiILL OAIULKLNU. The North Taranaki ittmt Club .11Jstituted an Jnrtuv.iuon yesterday m holding its annual race nveeting at Wuitara, and in including military events. The function, vvhiuli was of an informal nature, proved one o» the most suociasful gatherings the club has ever held, and ib is safe 'to say that it will be continued at Waitara in future years,

and the military events, wuieh proved so popular, will probably Ims enlarged upon. The day was ideal, and the site chosen, the old racecourse, charmingly situated alongside the river, wis well sheltered. 01 coulee, there is much room for improvement -in tlie course itself, ithero being some very sharp turns, whilst the track was 'fair too narrow

in places. The racing; was greatly e.njoyeu by the crowd of Gild people o." more tlhat was present, and aiey witnessed some line jumping, there not being a misihap until the last race. In thai, a flat ratio, ithert were two regrettable incidents. A field of sixteen started in tlhis event, and Pukere on .Nellie was apparently crowded out at the narrow place alongside the doulbJe jump, which was too close to the starting point. He accordingly had to itake the hurdles, and at the second one his mount knocked 1 over a spectator named U. Jeffries, who was stam-iig by the hurdle, but •nko fortunately escaped without any .injury beyond being stunned for a while. At the back of the course .Nel-

lie evidently crossed her legs and came down, and Pukere sustained a broken •ellarbone, and, it is thought, internal injuries. After being attended to by Ur. Campbell, he was remove- to the New Plymouth hospital. Of course, there were the usual incidents insepafaole from a course Miat is flagged for the occasion. Both the winners of the first two races ran inside a Hag and were disqualified, whilst the team that ran second in one of the military events did likewise.

The officials worked well. The secretory, Miy & L. Humphries', bad every de'ail well in hand, and was courteous and obliging. He had an invaluable ;s----sistant in Mr. AL. Humphries. Mr. \V. C. Weston, as clerk of the scales, wetsiicd the jockeys out promptly. Mr. S. l'auil despatched the fields to very even starts, and was complimented for his work in this department. The judging of me racing cventsi by Mr. I!, li. Pigott, and of the military events Lieutenant Joll, gave every satisfaction. The good fields and the line finishes were sufficient commentary on the wor.v of the handicappers, Messrs A 11. Halcombe, B. 11. Chancy, and li. W. Wlieatley. Mrs. Roberts had charge of the catering. '

The military events caused con'firdieralbte amusement, particularly ! the gun rescue event, the gun consisting of a shaped block oi' Wood, inscribed, "Captured in Stinoa," which was mounted on the fore carriage of a waggon, and looked quite warlike. It is expected that the meeting will prove a financial success. MiSJdßMfcS' HANDICAP JtuATKACK for trophies valued at £». Olio mile and a quarter. -\lr. XV. Hookham's br g Otaraua (owner) 12.7 1 Air.
