WAITARA NEWS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent). The. monthly meeting of the Waitara Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening. ,Present: His Worship the Maj»or, Ors. A. Spurdle, Blanchard, Langman, Morgan, Birdling and Brabant. Mr. C. Sprosen wrote asking to have the water connected to his property.— Granted. V

'Mr. L. C. Jennens wrote on behalf of the Hunt Club for permission to use the Kecreation Grounds to hold the Hunt Club's annual races. —Granted. Mrs. Cleave wrote drawing the Council's attention to the state, of the street leading to her residence, which was covered with brambles. —Left to the Works Committee to attend to.

From the secretary of the Seaside Improvement Committee,- asking if the Council could see its way to lay the water, to the junction of Gray street and Battiseombe Terrace; and if so, the committee would lay the. water on to the bathing house on the beach. Prom the Education Department, in reply to the Council's resolution protesting against the. proposed abolition of the •Taranaki education district. The Minister, in reply, stated that tho matter would have his careful consideration. The Valuation Department wrote asking the Council to forward particulars of the building permits since March 31 last. —The clerk was instructed to forward, the information.

The overseer's report was read, detailing tile amount of work done during tiie month. Tho borough foreman's report was read and adopted. Resolved that the matter of ploughing and levelling the Camp Reserve sports ground be left with the Reserves Committee, with power to act. Accounts amounting to £842 12s 2d were passed for payment.

Mr. G. IT. Saunders has kindly consented to give a picture entertainment on ■behalf of the local Patriotic Fund. The many friends of l)r. Ramagc will regret to hear of his death, which took place in Sydney. The Clifton Rowing Club's social committee held a successful social oil Tiuffldav evening, the main attraction being a wa'ltaino competition, which attracted eight entries. The winners were Miss Miss Holier and Mr. .Smith. 1 lie judges were, Mesdamesi Young. Burke, and Max. Splendid music was supplied .by leeks OlHcstra, and extras by Mrs. Max and Miss Can-. Mr. T. Buchanan was M.C. At the residence of Mrs.vll. Brookman on Tuesday afternoon, Mesdames l>urjjess. Hughes, BHmdell and F. S. Johns, of Xc\v Plymouth, addressed a number of local ladies on the work and objects ot the Victoria League. Instances were njven of what bad been accomplished during the present crisis.
