How Namur Fell

IRRESISTIBLE ARTILLERY ATTACK.

THIRTY GERMAN- BATTERIES CONCENTRATED.

London, August 20.

The Press Bureau published a, reliable account by a Belgian named Lieutenant Deppe, who has arrived in

London.

When Lieutenant Deppe left Namur on Sunday (August 23) the Germans, with Win howitzers, had knocked to pieces three of the north-eastern forts. They arrived at intervals and bombarded the town, which was defended toy tte fonrth Belgian division.

Namur was completely evacuated on Sunday, as the defenders were unable to withstand the heavy artillery fire. The Germans attacked in a three-ranks formation, the front lying down, the so cond kneeling, and the third standing. They afforded a splendid target for the machine guns. Thirty batteries of howitzers simultaneously concentrated on each of the forts so as to smother them. -

GERMAN TROOPS WITHDRAWING. Antwerp, August 29. It is officially stated that numerous trains conveyed German troops from the Courtrai region in an easterly direction. The retreating movement is greatly on the increase.
