A MIXER'S SUICIDE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Thames, August 17. Patrick Smith, aged 31, ,an unmarried man. who was a patient at the hospital, committed suicide) yesterday by blowing oil' his head with gelignite. Smith was a sull'era- from miners' phthisis. He affixed a cap, fuse and charge of gelignite, lighted the fuse and awaited death. The explosion blew his head oil' his body and shattered the windows. At an inquest a verdict of death while of unsound mind was returned. The police are. enquiring where the deceased obtained the gelignite. A FISHERMAN'S DEATH. Auckland, August 17. Joseph Winters, aged 49, a lishcrman, fell into the harbor while attempting to board a vessel on Saturday nigh", lie was rescued after ten minutes, and died in the hospital from internal injuries caused by falling from the rigging to the deck. A BUSH FATALITY. Taihape, August 17. A sad fatality occurred at Ohutu on .Saturday. Alfred Collard, bush foreman of the Egmont Box Company's mill was making his way through the hush to where the men were working 1 when a tree which was being felled, came down unexpectedly, crushing the man to the ground. He received terrible injuries, and died on the way to the mil). Deceased was a married man, 45 years of age, and was well known throughout the district.
