NEW PLYMOUTH MATTERS

Lieutenant Buxton, of the 11th Territorial Regiment, received a telegram from the defence authorities yesterday offering to extend the time within which tie could join the expeditionary force as Captain Quartermaster, but since he cannot make arrangements for carrying on his business here, he has been reluctantly obliged to decline the appointment. It is, however, a great compliment to Lieut. Buxton that the authorities should have been 60 anxious to obtain his services, and no doubt it was the vcrv excellent manner in which he discharged the duties, in a similar position at the Takapau camp which commended him so much to the department. A horse has been donated to the Defence Department from Okato. ' Mr F. W. Atkinson has donated a horse. The Mayor has received a letter from Mr Skitrop, borough engineer, in which he offers 25 per cent, of his salary to be used by the Borough Council in any manner it thinks fit in connection with the war. The staff and pupils of the New llv,mouth Boys' High School have donated ,£•2O to the funds of the New Plymouth ladies' committee. The children of the Fiteroy school have decided to purchase a horse to be donated to the Defence Department for use in the expeditionary force. ■ The half-yearly examination for the promotion of territorials will take place on Tuesday next. The locomotive department at New Plymouth has been instructed to have four members ready to guard lines of communication. They will be in fiul marching order, with blankets, etc., and will he supplied with ammunition. Mr Charles Alfred Rogers, one of Messrs Henry Brown and Oo.'s 1 factory and yard staff, is going to the front. 'llis fcllow-eniployces gave him a great send-off yesterday. Mr C. Ahier. the 'firm'!* principal at New Plymouth, on behalf of the staffs, presented him with a smoker's outfit and other useful gifts. Mr Ahier enjoined on him always to remember that he was a representative of New Zealand, and, what was still more, never to forget that he was a Jersey man.
