MR. A. BROWN FAREWELLED. A .NOTABLE GATHERING. At the Midhirst Hall on Thursday evening there was one of the most representative gatherings that could possibly be got together, the object being to farewell Mr. Alexander Brown, one oi Midhirst's oldest and most prominent settlers, who is leaving the district in order to make his home further north. Mr. Percy Harkness presided, and quite a number of apologies were read from absentees, all of whom paid high tributes to the guest of the evening. In proposing the toast of "Our Guest'' the chairman warmly eulogised Mr. Brown's services to the dairying industry, the County Council, and other spheres of public usefulness, and expressed the hope that he would always bear in mind his Midhirst friends.
Several other speakers referred in terms of praise to Mr. Brown's sterling qualities, and the great benefit that had accrued to the district through his residence there.
In reply, Mr. Brown gave a very interesting sketch of his life since he"first landed at New Plymouth 38 years ago, and he» dwelt at some length on matters connected with the dairy industry at Midhirst, especially in relation to the butter factory. He warmly thanked the organisers of the banquet and those present for the goodwill extended to him. On behalf of a large rumber of Midhirst residents, the chairman presented to Mr. Brown a handsomely illuminated address (the artistic work of Mr. J. McAllister), and a piece of silver ware for 'Mrs. Brown, the recipient expressing his thanks for the mementoes. •A number of toasts were honored, and an enjoyable selection of songs and recitations given.
