THE BOOT TRADE.
. DISCUSSED BY FARMERS' UN'IOX. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Discussion on tariff matters arose at the Farmers' Union Conference on the the Auckland remit urging the Dominion Executive "to watch closely any attempt by interested parties to further increase Customs duties." Captain Colbeck (Auckland) said it cost: the country £270,273 to foster the boot trade. The average wages of the men amounted to 7s 3d per day and of the women to 3s Ud. and the whole wages earned was £197,793. If the country decided to pay the whole of the wages, and let the boot operatives sit idle, a saving of £78,870 would be effected annually. The average duty on boots was 31 per cent. To this must ,be added freight and landing charges. Boots costing Bs/9d in England could not be sold in New Zealand at less than 17s 6d. The remit was carried.
