High Flying
A BALLOON ACCIDENT. TWO MEN .SERIOUSLY INJURED. Received 20, 10.5 p.m. Paris, July 30. Ju.-t as the Aerial Grand Prix at Tuilerieo was about to start, a gust swept a balloon against a tree. The occupants of tin- basket fell some fifty feet on to a p.is.-hig cart. Duval sustained severe injunes to hi* skuli, and IShnwhet, a former winner of the Gordon Hewlett Cup, was seriously hurt.

Guillaux's flying time was 552 miles in a litt.o over 9 hours, an average of over t>4 miles an hour. He made seven intermediate stops. A "Hccession of storm-, heavy rain, intense cold, and tin- difficulty of piloting over unknown country proved serious- .setbacks. At various points, he rose to great altitudes, up to 15,000 feet, to try to escape the storms, almost numbing liimi He had to by compass during l the journey between Harden and Sydney. The perilous wind was so strong and the rain beat so fiercely that sometimes he was nearly capsized.

T!>e experience, of the German aviator Oelerich, who rose 26,250 feet at Leipsic, suggest that any airman rising higher will have to be dressed in a diver's suit and helmet to protect him against the reduced pressure of the atmosphere, and will also have to carry his own -upply of air for breathm». Oelerich found regular breathing impossible at 14.800 and was forced to resort to the oxygen apparatus. At over 23.000 he experienced a feeling of i'lness and v as threatened with a fainting fit.
