The first Rugby Union test match between New "Zealand and Australia was played on the sports ground in the presence of Sir R. C. Munro-Ferguson, Go-vernor-General, and Sir G. Strickland, Governor of New South Wales, and a crowd of 90UO people. The recent rain had made the ground heavy and slippery, and constant showers during the afternoon did not improve the conditions. There was a strong, choppy cross wind, not favoring either team. Play opened with fast forward work', the Australian forwards attacking vigorously, but the Black backs repulsed them. The Blue forwards again attacking, Thomson took the ball over the line, but a force resulted. The Maori-. landers were again forced a few minutes later. After centre play, Ryan secured the ball from a lino-out, and passed to Black, to Lynch, who failed to take tho pass. The New Zealanders maintained their attack, but a force relieved. Flynn made a fine run, but was well tackled. Graham broke away and took the ball down Geld, but Dwyer cleared, finding touch well down. The New Zealanders v,'cn again attacking when half-time was called, with no score. Resuming, the. New Zealanders gained an advantage by the wind veering since the first half. From play near the centre Ryan socured, but kicked too hard, a force resulting. The Blue forwards set up a vigorous attack, but O'Brien relieved. The Australians were again attacking, but Wogan fumbled. Then the Blackforwards came away with an irresistible ' rush, fine work by 'Francis enabling McNeece to score. Graham converted.
