BIBLE-IN-SCHOOLS.
MR. FISHER AND JUS CONSCIENCE,
liy Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 14.
A deputation of the electors of Wellington Central, urged Mr. Fisher this morning to support the Bible in Schools Referendum Bill.
Dr. Gibb said their appeal was thoroughly democratic. They were extremely anxious that the question should not come into the sphere of party politics. Mr. Fisher saicl he felt that, having expressed his views in the House that lie was against 'both tile referendum and tin; Bible in schools, nothing couhl justify him in reversing his vote, unless he went ibcfore his constituents. In view of recent developments, the proper course, he thought, would be for hiin, when he went before lhe electors, to say that in principle he believed in the referendum, but he intended to vote "No" on this occasion. If he had the courage to vote according to his election promises and conscience and had to go under, lie eould not help it.
