Mi. J. P. Culhane, who was awarded a. silver medal by the .Royal Humane Society of New Zealand for attempting to rescue William Massey in an explosion and lire at the cjoltar works, Auckland, in July of last year, is at present a Tesident of New Plymouth. The medal will probably be presented by tihe Mayor of New Plymouth at some public function at an early date. !
The death is announced from Dannevirkc of Mr. John Speedy, aged 88, the oldest settler of Herbertville, where he had lived for 50 years. The deceased came to the Dominion when he was i2 years of 'age in the ship Lord William ißentinck. He resided at the Hint and Puketitiri before going to Herbertville. He leaves nine daughters and three sons. His wife predeceased him four years ago-
