CARNIVAL QUEEN CONTEST.

Tim inauguration of such a popular and attractive contest as tliat which is now engaging the attention of residents of Stratford and the large district around that thriving centre cannot fail Co infuse life into the dull season of the year. The object in view is the very laudable one of assisting the funds of the Beautifying Society and the Muni- ' iiipal Band, two important bodies tli.it deserve well of the people and thoroughly justify the exercise of that publie spirit which testifies more 6urely than anything else to the presence of a progressiveness and pride that does credit to the dwellers of any district. The nomination of candidates for tne honor of queenship creates a friendly rivalry that calls for tlhe the best efforts of the supporters of the nominees, and though the cause may be for the time being placed in the background it is only biding its time to reap the 'benefit. Even those who are not in sympathy with either of the objects which it is proposed to benefit may well become enthusiastic over championing the claims of some lady to the title of Carnival Queen, and every vote purchased helps the candidates and the cause. In this matter the credit of the Stratford district is at stake, and the people should see to it that there is nothing to mar the lustre of the district's reputation. In other words, every nerve should be strained to make the project a pronounced success. With regard to the Beautifying Society, its efforts to improve the appearance of the town are sadly hampered by lack of funds, and if there is one direction in which pride is justifiable it is in beautifying a town. Stratford is the centre of a rich, thriving and prosperous district, and should reflect these attributes in its appearance. The Band j is striving bravely to attain a good reputation, and is animated by the spirit that should ensure success, but it needs . uniforms and instruments. No town is worthy of the name unless it has an efficient and presentable band. All things j considered, there is every inducement for the people to enter into the Carnival Queen contest with enthusiasm, and it is certain there should be no regret over the energy expended when the contest is over. From now omvar.'-i there should be a series of. entertainments, football and other matches to forward the interests of the various candidates, and these should i>e largely patronised. The first candidate to be nominated was Miss Minnie Hignett, who has received the imprimatur of the sports .vicicties, and Mr. E. S. Rutherfurd has been elected to represent the sports committee on the Carnival Executive. GENERAL. A week or so back it was stated in the Daily News that the Stratford Mountain Club had decided to popularise the mountain by means of ft vigorous advertising campaign. The Eltham Argus humorously suggested that the advertisements should state that by starting from Eltham visitors would hav" the pleasure of riding over a tar-sealed i road. The scribe who contributes motor,' notes to the Dominion has gone one better. This is what he says: "The Stratford Mountain Club points out that motorists visiting Mount Egmont. by starting .from Eltham can enjoy the pleasure Qf driving along a beautiful ! tar-sealed road, .and can drive right lip to the door of the Mountain House." Any unfortunate motorist expecting a tar-sealed road to the door of the Mountain House will be woefully disappointed! A reminder is given that nominations for the Carnival Queen close to-morrow. The usual monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council takes place tomorrow. An old' resident of Stratford named Daniel Thomas Bennett passed away at the Stratford Hospital, at the Tipe age of 85 years. Your photograph will please them all —some of your friends have been expecting one for a long time —don't be satisfied with one taken years ago. Sc-nd them a fresh portrait, just as you are to-d&v, in your everyday attire. Having your portrait taken is as pleasant as an informal call on good friends.
