When the boat overturned, big waves were running in the channel, and washed off the men, who were clinging, numbied by the bitter- cold, to the upturned boat. Buchanan made gallant efforts to save Freeney, but became exhausted and was dashed against the rocks and sank. The bodies give evidence that skaTks attacked some of the victims whea they were attempting to reach lead.
