■REMISSION OF RATES ASKED. By Cable-Press Association-Copyright Auckland Last Night. A deputation from the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Sports PraSection League this afternoon waited upon the Mayor {Mr. G J. raw) to ask for remission of rates on grounds used exclusively for purposes of an; out-door sport and not for profit q gain. The Mayor said thfct he waul confess to a good deal of sympatic I with the views put before him. It seem ed to him that in a city where popuiiS tion was crowding in, the aporte Ma were fulfilling a useful public duty. OBiey: were keeping lung space open, 'and ti» whole community got the benefit. OW fflie bowling and tennis grounds were minted to- the us© «f a. comparative few, but so many roads of open space over which the winds of heaven might Wow were preferable to terraces of cottages; so it seemed to him that they were helping the municipality. M ; might be possible to do something irt ! the direction indicated. In the case of tlhc golf club to which he belonged, they were being very heavily penalised. He thought the whole thing should be gone into by the Legislature, .and so far as Auckland City was concerned, he •thought it probable that something could be be done. He would be glad if the deputation would appoint two of its members to meet the- finance cowmittee of the City Council at its next meeting.
