THE TAKANAKI SBAT. HON. 0. SAMUEL WILL NOT; STAND. NOT A PARTY MAN. A deputation which, waited on the Hon. 0. Samuel, from the Liberal and Labor League, baa at least secured an answer to the rumors which have been busy (jf late to the effect that that gentleman would be a, candidate for the I'aranaki seat in the Liberal interest at the forthcoming election. Mr. Samuel stated definitely that he (had no such intention, us he would not allow himself to b e nominated as a candidate for a party, nor, in fact, take a seat in a House swayed by the influence of partv politics. "I am," he said, "utterly op"poscd to the present system of party government. I would not, without serious discomfort to myself, vote against my convictions as to what was best fo" the interest of the country. Under the present sjstem of things one has irequently to sacrifice what one believes to be in the best interests of the people tor the mk e of the party to which one belongs. I experienced that during the two Parliaments in which. I represented this district and I retired! from the House of Representatives, to which I had every reason to believe I should be returned unopposed, because I found the position intolerable, being compelled 10 often to vote against ray own, convictions in th; interests of the party to which I was for the time being attach•Mr. Samuel concluded by makina clear to the deputation that he wis making n 0 charge against the present member f or tiie district, or agaiist the Government or Opposition, but merely expressing his disapproval of a system, i V a l uest «»>, he said that lie did not kivow whether he would! be appointed to a seat on the Legislative Council 0 r uot. The seat which he had flew for the last seven years in the toancil had given him an opportunity •tor doing his best for the people at large without being restricted by partv considerations, and therefore ilehad found none of the difficulties or unpleasantnesses whidl U had experienced m the House.
