RAISING THE TARIFF WALL.
TO INCREASE COST OF BUILDING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. A deputation from the timber workera, which waited on the Hon. F. M. «. Fisher to-day, made a request that the duty on imported doors and other joincm-, which were now coming into the Dominion in large quantities, especially from Sweden and Norway, should be increased from 30 to 60 per cent. It was stated that already many machines in New Zealand were being rendered idle by these importations, and that a further increase in importations would te detrimental to the interests of both employers and employees. In reply, Mr. Fisher said that various industries in asking for increased protection wer« putting the Government into a cleft stick. It was obvious that if high protection were granted as requested it would be impossible to bring about the expected reduction in the cost of living. The two things were irreconcilable. The deputation also repeated the request for an extra import duty on small sizes of imported timber. The Minister stated that nothing could be done in regard to the revision of the tariff this year.
