STRATFORD NEWS.
BOOSTING THE MOUNTAIN. A HEALTHY RIVALRY. The New Plymouth Tourist and Expansion League stirred up Stratford to the great possibilities of the mountain tourist traffic, and the Stratford people have certainly put some "ginger" into the scheme. The Mountain Club intend publishing cards setting forth details of "the picturesque and charming beauty spots so close at hand." They will also point out that the shortest and casießt route to the mountain may be taken advantage of by starting from Stratford. Anent this, the Eltham Argus says: "We would also suggest that the cards should also mention that by starting from Eltham the tourist can enjoy the pleasure of driving along a beautiful tar-sealed road; that the motorist can drive right up to the door of the mountain house; that the drive from the reserve gates under the boughs of magnificent forest trees is a delight that the tourist never forgets; that the most charming view of Dawson's Falls is obtained by the Eltham route. We hop* that the Stratford Mountian Club will not omit these details from their advertising cards—otherwise they will be incomplete." The Inglowood Record also takes a hand thus: —The cards would still be incomplete unless they set out the fact that by making Inglewood their home for the night tourists can enjoy hotel accommodation equal to anything between Auckland and Wellington; can also enjoy the pleasure of walking on tar-scaled footpaths; a two hours' drive |
to the hotel without ever leaving the metalled road, and the luxuries of a thoroughly up-to-date hostelry half-way up the mountain, where life ia worth I living and every comfort obtainable. I The shortest drive from railway to mountain-house; well-blazed tracks through glorious primeval bush; and the honorary services of competent guides, ire only a few of Stratford's winning hand. 1
GENERAL. Matters in connection with the Carnival Queen contct arc moving ahead. The friendly society's' representatives meet this evening to select a candidate, and to-morrow evening the various bodies connected with sport will meet for a similar purpose. The Band of Hope had a very enjoyable evening on Tuesday, when a most acceptable programme was carried out, the Rev. A. 0. Harris presiding. It included songs by Misses Boon, Sole and Henry, also a song by Mr. Russ; duet by Misses V. Cameron and M. Webber; recitations by Misses M. Webber, 13. Foster and Master J. Norton; a temperance item by Will Dobson, and a comic reading by Don McAllister. There was also a capital dialogue, which went well, and an appropriate address by the chairman. There was a considerable muster of school boys at the football match in Victoria Park yesterday. While allowing for a full exhibition of partisanship which is only 7iatural with boys, there were some whose remarks about the visitors went beyond the border-line of good manners. Boys cannot learn too early to be decently courteous, and to "play the game." During the greater part of yesterday a high wind and heavy rain swept over Stratford, but fortunately the weather broke, in time for the football match to be played in the afternoon, but most people spont the half-holiday at home, although they had been looking forward to a continuance of the magnificent weather that has prevailed for nearly a week. One of the oldest residents at Tututawa, Mrs. J. B. NVirris, has just passed away, after a short illness. The greatest sympathy is felt for the bereaved husband and children. Your photograph will please them all —some of your friends have been expecting one for a long time—don't be satisfied with one taken years ago. Send them a fresh portrait, just as you are to-d&v, in your everyday attire. Having your portrait taken is as pleasant as an informal call on good friends. Make an appointment td-day with Mr McAllister. Stratford
