The work is now proceeding of coverin" the boles with iron plates, Pumps, iiaws'jirs, and other salvage gear, b; ought from Wellington by the Tto-a-whiti, are being carted to the scene of the wreck.
The Kauri ia by no means an old boat, having been Milt ill Hartlepool in 1005 by Messrs. PurnMa, Withy indl 00. for, ■Messrs. J. and W. Harrison. She is classed 100 A 1 at Lloyd's, and has Hhe following dimensions: (Length 325 feet, breadth 47 feet, depth 2£3 feet. The" Union Company purchased the Kauri after the loss of the Kotutai, a nmch smaller vessel, which was wrecked at.Greymouth on lYttl May, 1912. The tessel was originally named the Harmony, and left Bristol for Dunedin on IStih, June, 1812. En route the Kauri <l :it Newcastle for a load of hardwood and coal, and arrived at headquarters of the Union Company on 19th September, 1912. She is a large cargocarrier of 2833 >ns register, aid had a dead weight' carrying capacity' of 6050 tons. The Ka/uri is neajjy the same i<ize as the Whangape, »ad was considered, a notable addition to the Union Companyla fleet. In appearance the vessel is bluff-bowed, with an almost perpendicular funnel ainidaMps, and well decks fore and oft.
Captain G. N. Ruxton has with him the following officers:—First, Mr W Cosaentine; 1 second, Mr. D. OUara;' and third, Mr. J. Seatoun; chief engineer, Mr. A. O.'McMaster; wkond. Mr. Geoiw Luke; third, Mr. T. B. Butter. Mr Lake is the third ton of the Mayor of Wellington. .
