A WHARF FATALITY.

j Telegraph— Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. Archibald Campbell, the railway tally who was crushed in a truck by a 4'/a-ton lift from the s.s. Waiwera on Thursday morning, died about midnight. TJiis morning an inquest was opened for the evidence of members of the crew. The accident was caused by a special fixing for the lift giving way. Anderson (a"lamp trimmer), Wills (boatswain) and Roberts (third officer) gave evidence regarding the gear. Anderson, said to be a competent seaman, fixed it, using a new strap made of 3'/ 2 in Manila rope, which should, bear four tons, and four plies were used. He could not tell how or where tho rope, broke. The inquest was adjourned for local evidence till Monday. The deceased was a native of Now South Wales, was married, and had three young children. He was one of the two men who refused to fall in line with the strikers some time ago. He had been known' as a cricketer, and umpired in the New South Wales v. South Canterbury match at Teinuka last season.
