BAND CONTEST AT HAWERA

TARANAKI BANDS COMPETING. Pour bands entered for quickstep band marching competition at Hawera yesterday, viz., Eltham, Kaponga, Hawera and Stratford, who were drawn to play in that order. <Licut. G. Buckley judged the music, which was a quickstep, "Marching Home," by. Walter Revell. In this the points were very close, Kaponga Band, under Bandmaster Woods, winning with 79 points, Stratford (under Bandmaster Marshall) being second with 77 points, Eltham (Bandmaster Bcesley) third with 76, and Hawera (Bandmaster MeConnell) last with 75. In the course of conversation, Lieut. Buckley said that he considered the playing of the bands in general was very creditable, considering the cold day, which was detrimental to the fingering of brass instruments.; Taranaki should, he thought, be proud of possessing four such line eountry bafnds. The first band, he considered, excelled in tone. Captains E. C. Doveyand M. McDonnell were the judges of marching, and in this department Hawera, under Lieut. Johnson, excelled easily, with lOCV2 points, Kaponga (Drum-major Hollard) being next with 96 and Stratford (Lieut. Furby) 95. Stratford got mixed up at the right wheel, and lost several points. Eltham (Drum-major Rogers) were last with 89% points. The competition therefore resulted:— March Music Total Hawera 100'/, 75 181% Kaponga 96 79 175 Stratford 05 77 172 Eltham SO'/. 76 165%

Hawcra and Eltham appeared in uniform and Stratford and Kaponga in mufti. At the conclusion, the massed bands, under the Ibaton of Lieut. Buckley, played the contest piece very creditably. ~ , , , The points in marching were awarded as follows: 1
