A SCOW OUT IN HALF. Per Press Association.
Auckland, June 24.
At six o'clock this morning the steamer Clansman collided with the scow Pahiki in the harbor, cutting the scow in two. The crew of the crew, three men, were picked up by the Clansman's boats. The Clansman's officers assert that the scow was not showing a light. The master of the scow asserts that she was.
THEFTS OF JEWELLERY. Wellington, June 24. Hiram Dexter, a young man, pleaded guilty to seven charges of theft of jewellery from hotels and was committed for sentence. All the stolen jewellery was recovered except one ring.
BREACH OF GAMING LAW. Christehurch, June 24. Edgar Neale, on a charge of keeping a gaming house, was fined £SO and costs, the evidence showing that he was a partner with Granger, who was previously convicted.
CHARGE AGAINST A POLICEMAN. Oamaru, June 24. John Johnston, a constable, pleaded guilty to a charge of desertion from the police force. Johnston's counsel explained that Johnston was given to understand by Inspector Mitchell (Duncdin) that his' resignation would take effect from the day lie left Oamaru, and suggested that the charge be altered to one of leaving the service without permission in writing. This was agreed to, and the Magistrate fined Johnston £25.
