Soundings taken by the Federal trawler in Basß Straits disclosed a number of inaccuracies regarding the depth and other data. The soundings established that a central basin with a maximum depth of 53 fathoms extends from ■the Tasmanian coast into the Southern Ocean. Previously the greatest depth marked was 48 fathoms.
MISSIONARIES ANNOYED. Received 23, 10.10 p.m. London, June 23. A San Salvador cable states that t)ho Portuguese authorities 1 detained and opened the Baptist missionaries' mail to Great Britain. The Foreign Office has made representations to Lisbon.
ALEDA'S CREW STILL MISSING. Received' 23, 10.10 pin. Sydney, June 23. Search was made for the crew of the Aleda. Lifebelts and clothing were found, Twit no trace of the. sailors.

The Tariff Commission report states that the restoration of British agriculture to its prooer historic place requires the adoption of an agricultural tariff. The dependence of Groat Britain upon imported meat and diairy produce continues to increase. The larger _ part could be produced in Great Britain.
MUSICIAN'S ON STRIKE.

The National Orchestra dispute is still unsettled. The manager states that the newcomers engaged are Australians, and not Americans.
BAFFLED POLICE. Times and Sydney Sun Services. Received 23, 5.45 p.m. New York, June 23. The police at Los Angeles sought to attach the biplane of a Japanese exarmy aviator, but when the officers arrived all that was visible was a speck in the sky, representing the aviator end his machine.
HILL CREST DISASTER. Received 23, 10.10 p.m. Ottawa, June 23. The Government has decided to give five thousand dollars to the Hill Crest ■mine relief fund. Received 24, 12.55 a.m. 'Sydney*. June ?3. All hope of finding the Altda's crew ha-s been abandoned, and the tug has returned. ' ',-'
