THE MUNICIPAL BAND.
j COMPETES AT HAWERA. . For some time past tlie Stratford Municipal Band lias been hard at work practising for the marching contest which is to take place at the gymkhana in connection with the show at Hawera on Thursday, and it is confidently expected that the members will give a very creditable account of themselves, judging from the performance which they gave in Victoria Park on Sunday. It is matter for regret that the handsmen have not yet obtained their uniforms, 'but this difficulty has been overcome by borrowing so that they should present a favorable appearance. The men are all actuated by the proper spirit, and may be relied 011 to do their best, and the experience gained will oe valuable.
There was a good attendance at the concert in Victoria Park 011 Sunday, and a collection taken up for the relief of a family in distress realised nearly £4. Such .a sympathetic action is most commendable, and should earn for the band an enlarged measure of public support. It is the band's intention, prior to entraining for Hawera on Thursday morning, to play in Broadway.

Mr. J. W. McMillan, who is % breeder of Airedaile3, is strongly impressed with the suitableness of these dogs for assisting the police in their work.
